Carrie Underwood Invited to Join the Grand Ole Opry Carrie Underwood will be formally inducted as a Grand Ole Opry member during the May 10 performance of the long-running radio show. The American Idol winner received the invitation from Opry member Randy Travis during Saturday night's (March 15) show after she sang Travis' "I Told You So," a song she recorded and released on her Carnival Ride album. In accepting the invitation, Underwood said, "This is one of the best nights of my life, and it's certainly something I'll never forget. And I'm glad each and every one of you were here to share it with me. This has been absolutely amazing." Underwood made her first Opry appearance on June 10, 2005, just two weeks after winning the American Idol competition.
Country Music Hall of Fame Member Eddy Arnold's Wife Dies Sally Gayhart Arnold, the 87-year-old wife of Country Music Hall of Fame member Eddy Arnold, died Tuesday (March 11) at a Nashville-area hospital after being admitted this past weekend for breathing difficulties. Eddy Arnold, 89, underwent hip replacement surgery last week at a Nashville hospital. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in November. With a list of 28 No. 1 hits, including "Anytime," "Bouquet of Roses," The Cattle Call" and "Make the World Go Away," he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966.
Family Tradition Exhibit Opens March 28 A new exhibit honoring Hank Williams and Hank Williams Jr. will open at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on March 28. Authorized by the Williams family, Family Tradition: The Williams Family Legacy will include Hank Williams' fiddle, Hank William Jr.'s toddler-size Nudie suits, Hank and Audrey Williams' wedding invitation and the notes saved from Williams' funeral. Hank Williams Jr. will participate in an interview and concert at the Hall on March 29. Family Tradition will run through Dec. 31, 2009, and replaces the recent Ray Charles exhibit.
Hall of Fame Reveals New Inductees Tom T. Hall, Emmylou Harris, the Statler Brothers and Ernest V. "Pop" Stoneman will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year. The announcement was made at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Tuesday morning (Feb. 12). This year, induction periods included pre-World War II (Stoneman), World War II to 1975 (Hall, Statler Brothers) and 1975 to the present (Harris). Inductees are voted on by a Country Music Association (CMA) committee.
